Watson and the Shark, John Singleton Copley (American), 1778, oil on canvas.  This painting memorializes a true event, when 14-year-old Brook Watson was attacked by a shark in Havana Harbor.  Watson lost his right leg below the knee but survived the attack, and went on to a successful career as a politician,  eventually becoming the Lord Mayor of London.  This dramatic painting cemented Copley's reputation as the premier American painter of the 18th century.
